Makoto Tamura
Makoto Tamura is a Senior Advisor with ASG’s East Asia & Pacific practice, where he advises clients in the health care sector and beyond as they develop and execute business and growth strategies for the Japanese market.
Dr. Tamura comes to ASG after holding senior health care leadership positions across academia, industry, and government in Japan. He led Japan government affairs for two of the world’s leading multinational health care companies, serving as Vice President for Government Affairs at both Abbott Japan and Boston Scientific Japan. Between 2011 and 2017, Dr. Tamura also served as an expert member of the Japanese Government Healthcare Reimbursement Council, the “Chuikyo.”
Earlier in his career, Dr. Tamura was a professor on the medical faculty at the University of Tokyo and the International University of Health and Welfare. He has served as the chair of the American Chamber of Commerce Japan (ACCJ) Medical Device Subcommittee and as a member of the American Medical Devices and Diagnostics Manufacturers’ Association’s (AMDD) Reimbursement Working Group.
Dr. Tamura is the CEO of the Healthcare System Planning Institute, Director of the Medical Technology Policy Research Institute, a Senior Researcher at the Japan Association for Advancement of Medical Equipment, and a Research Professor at the International University of Health and Welfare.
He received his M.A. and PhD in Health Science from the University of Tokyo, as well as an M.A. in Management from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.
He is based in Tokyo, Japan.
