Mobilizing investment and increasing impact in emerging markets
The Challenge
An international non-profit organization working to improve access to water and sanitation in developing countries sought ASG’s assistance to develop and implement an advocacy strategy in India. The goal of the strategy was to mobilize additional investment in the water and sanitation sector and increase adoption and impact of the client’s program.
The ASG Approach
ASG’s India team identified, assessed, and prioritized advocacy opportunities to highlight the overlapping objectives of the government and our client. We then worked to position our client’s product as an innovative and effective channel for the government to achieve its national development goals at the provincial level. After developing analytical tools to identify states with the greatest need for our client’s capabilities, we engaged with officials in those states to help build strong working relationships with our client.
The Result
With ASG’s support, our client helped persuade the government to designate water and sanitation as a priority investment sector for India’s commercial lenders. This step created the potential for significant expansion of capital flows into this sector. We helped the client establish strong relationships with private investors and state governments, and identified three states in which to expand the client’s development efforts. Going forward, we continued to work with the client to refine, implement, and scale its expansion strategy in India and other countries.
