GAIN Summit Highlights: Saudi Arabia's AI Ambitions: Threading the geopolitical needle
In September 2024, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia hosted the third Generative AI (GAIN) Summit. The Summit brought to Riyadh a mix of foreign technology and AI infrastructure firms for a three-day long program proclaiming the Kingdom’s AI capabilities and commitment and positioning the country as the “partner of choice for the people, planet and prosperity.” Combined with the substantial financial resources that KSA has committed to AI ventures, Saudi is well-positioned to challenge the UAE in establishing an AI ecosystem in the Middle East. However, while the program featured strikingly few mentions of the United States, China, or the competitive dynamic between the two countries that increasingly defines the global AI market, the Kingdom’s AI ambitions are likely to bring increased scrutiny from Washington.
